Recap: At largest MACo Conference in 70-Years, WGL Energy Brings Sustainability Message, Hosts Its First MACo Discussion Panel
During the week of August 22, WGL Energy returned to exhibit at the Summer Conference hosted by the Maryland Association of Counties, better known as MACo, with whom WGL Energy has been a partner for more than 25-years.
Our line-up, announced before the show, included the first time WGL Energy hosted a panel at the event, which turned into a lively and productive exchange about timely sustainability topics with industry experts. Please see more on that in a separate post with video!
WGL Energy’s presence featured our traditional offerings of retail electricity and natural gas (including certified natural gas), as well as our renewable energy offerings like renewable energy credits (RECs) and carbon offsets. WGL Energy’s booth was staffed with seasoned company representatives, greeting a steady flow of interested attendees curious about our company’s services.
Significantly, we “greened” the event by providing carbon offsets to balance the carbon emissions expected to be produced from concession stands, lighting, hotel stays and travel!
The exhibit organizers estimated that 3,000 participants walked the hallways, participated and engaged in a full line up of symposium speakers, training sessions and networking. This year seemed as robust as ever; no surprise it was the organization’s largest event with the most participants since its founding 70-years ago!
Energy and Environment – Top of Mind
Energy and sustainability topics were hard to miss, from the importance of lowering carbon impact to protecting our local environment, such as the Chesapeake Bay, in discussions with fellow attendees and from various presenters and exhibitors representing energy companies, energy vendors, policymakers and non-profit organizations.
And let’s not forget, Maryland set big goals for itself to achieve significant greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions of nearly 50% by 2030, and aims for net-zero economy-wide GHG emissions by 2045. It was clear based on many groups we interacted with day-to-day that this commitment has only intensified.
Conversations about the importance of being environmental stewards and deploying the right solutions and approach were taking place among a variety of parties and show participants. That we greened the event that week was promoted as a victory to support responsible, environmentally friendly practices!
WGL Energy-Hosted Panel Addressed the Road to Sustainability and What it Takes
Our panel, the first hosted by WGL Energy, was well attended, touching on many of the important topics being discussed frequently throughout the event at round tables and in one-on-one networking meetings.
The moderator, Larry DePompei, WGL Energy’s Senior Director, Commercial and Green Initiatives, navigated an engaged audience across many facets of the sustainability landscape, exploring topics such as solar being part of the diverse energy mix “equation” for customers and innovative fuels that have high standards for production such as certified natural gas.
Overall, it was fantastic seeing familiar faces in a vibrant setting to exchange ideas, catch up and network about business opportunities and ways to collaborate. It truly felt like the MACo community was in full swing and the event leaders outdid themselves once again! The ability to connect all of us together in one setting – all of those committed to Maryland and who support Marylanders every day – made for a special time. And yes, that includes the traditional crab feast on Friday!
We look forward to Winter MACo on January 3-6, 2023, at the Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay Hotel in Cambridge, MD.
