Play Ball to Plant Trees – Tree Planted for Every Nationals Run!

4/3/2023

As Nationals players step up to the plate this season, fans can cheer for the thrill of the game and celebrate an added tree for every run

Washington Nationals fans have something extra to cheer about this season. The Nationals and WGL Energy announce an exciting program to further champion the environment and cleaner air for our community. For every run scored by a Nationals player at home during the 2023 regular season, WGL Energy has committed to planting a tree in the DMV.

That’s only part of what’s on deck. For every customer that signs up for one of our clean energy offerings from Certified Natural Gas, Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) that support Wind Power projects, or Carbon Offsets — a tree will be planted on their behalf, too!

This joint initiative embodies the shared dedication to a sustainable future by both the Nationals and WGL Energy. With more trees in the ground, our neighbors, friends and families enjoy the benefits of improving air quality, providing shade and cooling, protecting the local watershed and natural waterways, and enhancing the beauty of where we live, work and play. As a retail energy supplier that offers choice to energy consumers in the Mid-Atlantic, we applaud our partnership as an important step toward maintaining a focus on environmental stewardship.

The Nationals are a natural fit for us.  Over the years, among many examples of the organization conserving energy and embracing combating climate change, Nationals Park is the first major professional stadium to achieve LEED Silver Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. We also commend them for implementing numerous initiatives to reduce energy and water usage, improve recycling and composting, and promote sustainable transportation.

For its part, WGL Energy has a long history of environmental-friendly ambitions, including a more than 12-year partnership of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, resulting in over 60,000 trees planted, hundreds of volunteer hours and more than $1.2 million donated to protect the Bay, a national treasure.

Starting today, working side-by-side, we aim to make even bigger strides.

The tree planting program rolled out with WGL Energy, officially launched on Opening Day on March 30, is a fun, simple and meaningful addition to these efforts.  What’s more, it empowers others outside of the Nationals organization (by signing up for special energy offerings) to get in the game and make a tangible impact.

The campaign will culminate on the field at Nationals Park at the end of the regular season where we’ll unveil our plans to add the number of trees-matching-runs-scored to local area watershed locations at organized planting events, with details to be shared at a later date.

“We are thrilled to go all in with the Nationals to get more trees in the ground,” said Clint Zediak, Vice President of Sales and Marketing, WGL Energy.  “We recognize the importance of trees in our community and the lasting impacts they can have to enhance our neighborhoods, livelihoods, reduce air pollution, and more. We’re aligned in making the DC-area truly a greener place, and promise to ‘root’ loudly for lots of scores this season.”

Join us in taking our passion for a cleaner air tomorrow to the next level, creating tangible benefits across the DC-area, all while backing our beloved Nationals team. Let’s root, root, root for many victories ahead, runs scored, and trees planted!
