Choose Carbon Offsets Matched to Natural Gas Usage for Your Home

Choose natural gas from WGL Energy matched with carbon offsets to reduce your carbon footprint and support cleaner air and water. Customers who select our 100% carbon offset option counterbalance, or offset, the environmental impact of their residential natural gas usage.

A carbon offset represents a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions made in one place to compensate for emissions created in another place. Our carbon offsets come from emission reduction projects such as landfill gas capture and destruction and efficient transportation. They're our way of offering you an enhanced natural gas product and committing to cleaner air and water in our region.

Did you know…

  • WGL Energy’s RECs are Green-e certified and may be sourced from wind generators throughout the country. Typically, our RECs are sourced from Texas or the Mid-West.
  • Clean Steps Wind power is sourced from projects located within the PJM ISO footprint. The majority of Wind RECs are sourced from PA, MD, WV and OH.
  • Clean Steps is not paired with the purchase of electricity. It is a REC only product.

Carbon Reduction Funds

Our carbon offsets are unique because they go one step further by also including investments in activities such as tree plantings that improve air and water quality. WGL Energy and its clean energy partner, Sterling Planet, jointly invest a portion of the proceeds into the "Carbon Reduction" and the "PA Carbon Reduction" funds every time carbon offsets are purchased. The carbon reduction funds are central to the program's long-term benefits. The investments made by WGL Energy and Sterling Planet into the Carbon Reduction Fund and the PA Carbon Reduction Fund are managed by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) and go toward new projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while also helping to improve air and water quality in the Chesapeake Bay region and the state of Pennsylvania.
